Question: If an electric kettle boils dry, and is not unplugged, what will happen next?
Will there be a fire? The kettle itself is not stainless steel or aluminum, but some sort of plastic-y material. I assume the element would eventually melt it , would we be overcome by toxic fumes before the fire consumes us? (there is no automatic shutoff on this kettle kids.)
My mother is getting very forgetful and I have already unplugged the kettle once when it boiled dry. I am throwing it out!! Now!!Answer: Electric kettles have a small switch inside that is supposed to open when the kettle boils dry. They are not very good in old kettles when they get a lot of lime in them. Plug in your kettle with bit of water in it and let it boil dry while you watch. When the kettle is dry it should switch off. After it cools down again the switch will close and it will work. The best is not to let it boil dry because if the switch does not work the plastic will melt and could cause a fire or worse.
