Question: What's the correct way to use a carpet steam cleaner?
I've got a Bissel quick steam carpet cleaner. When you use it, what's the best way to make sure you get your carpets as clean as possible? Would you go slowly across the floor, or more quickly as though you're scrubbing the dirt away?
Answer: I get good results by making slow, overlapping strokes when depositing the detergent. I will lay down detergent four feet in length, before moving to my left about 5-6 inches (half of the width of the steamer blade). I find by overlapping 5-6 inches I get the best distribution of detergent.
After covering three widths of the steamer blade I go back over the wet area on the drying cycle. Here, overlapping is even more important. It is also helpful to move the steamer head very slowly to extract as much dirty water as possible. My steamer has a clear plastic hood which allows me to see the water as it is vacuumed up and into the machine. I continue back and forth over the same wet area until I no longer see dirty water extracted. This is important to ensure no residue is left in the carpet. It also significantly reduces carpet drying time.
Repeat above until whole carpet is done.
