Question: When and how do you prune mop-head hydrangeas?
The first blooms are beginning to die off and wilt, so I would like to prune them. But I'm not sure how to or when or if I should just leave them?
I tried some of the how to sites on pruning, but I'm still a bit confused as to when and how. Can any of you gardeners out there help me out?
Answer: Do not cut off the current year's growth. Hydrangeas bloom on year-old wood, unless they're the new everblooming ones. During fall or winter prune 1/3 of the oldest stems. I have two close to the house, and a whole row along the driveway. I prune the two close ones to keep them neat, and they bloom well , but I never prune the long row, and they've never failed to reward me by completely covering the whole shrub with bloom.
You can deadhead the faded blooms, if you like, anytime, but keep your year-old wood.
