Question: Did I screw up at work?
I placed some important photographs in an open FedEx box and propped the box against my file cabinets inside my office, intending to mail it the next day. The next day, the box was gone, and we're 99% sure the cleaning people threw it out with the contents of my recycle bin and Trash Can, even though the box was nowhere near my cans and we have a policy of putting boxes OUTSIDE our offices if we want them to be tossed. No one thinks I did anything wrong, but I can't shake the feeling that I could've done something differently, and I feel really guilty and like I should apologize to someone. The photos weren't even worth stealing, but they were very valuable to a client.
We checked with maintenance, but the trash had already been compacted.How can I stop feeling like this is somehow my fault?
Answer: Can the photos be reproduced? Will it harm the client in any way if they fall into the wrong hands?
If the answer to the first question is 'yes', and the answer to the second is 'no', then just reproduce and send them.
No sense in beating yourself up over something that is done and over. Chalk it up to experience and move on. And next time, be more careful about leaving stuff on the floor.
Perhaps you could think about changing your trashed box policy. Our work has a policy about boxes being left out for the cleaning people. Any boxes for the trash MUST be marked "TRASH". Otherwise the cleaning people will not take them. I have seen boxes sit around for a week or more because someone did not mark them.
