Question: How did they dispose of garbage before plastic trash bags were invented?
Plastic's only been around since the 50's... Trash bags must be a fairly new invention... so how did people throw garbage away before that???
Answer: I remember in the 60's just about everyone had an incinerator in their backyard and people burned their trash and a lot of other garbage. What you could not burn -- tin cans, etc., was just put in a garbage can and picked up once a week or so by the trash company.
In the mid 60's or maybe late 60's or early 70's, they finally figured out what all those incinerators were doing to the air quality and they were outlawed. I remember we were so disappointed because it was fun to burn the trash, especially on cold days because you could play outside and warm up by the incinerator. What fun memories your question has brought up. I am going to go google incinerators to see if I can find them.

I sat on the High Speed train with Fred, racing across Japan on the way to another meeting without end. Looking out the window we could not see Mt Fuji. We knew he was there and we were 99.99% sure that we would not be able to see. We also looked anyway. Of course, obscured by clouds, pollution, or both, we could not see. Taking my basket 7-11 salmon rice ball, a handful mandarin orange and a chocolate bar Crunky, I stuffed into the bag 7-11 and commented, "I miss trash."
I have known better than to make such a comment about Fred. After 9-11, all the garbage on the trains of balls were sealed shut and people should take their trash off the train with them, or leave the train. He quickly replied: "You know, the trains in Japan have always been a place you can be sure to find a Trash Can. Where can we be sure of finding the garbage? Certainly not in the streets and certainly not in the parks. Did I never you about Mike and his trash survey? "
I nodded my head, but my nod in vain. Fred began to me about Mike and his garbage again, "Mike made the mistake of responding to one of those whom we ask for foreign residents comments on life in the surveys in Japan. Mike was tired of going to the park with his son not find garbage and see all the debris scattered. Mike thinks that if there were garbage, people would use them. Mike mistakenly thought that the municipal bins were an obvious service. Thus, he said therefor. Would you like guys that both the mayor has done all the way out of the house of Mike to explain why there was no trash in the park? They explained that bins would be an added expense that the city would not pay for, so they had take your litter with you approach. When Mike said that taking your garbage home approach does not work and people were just dumping their trash in the park, what do you think they have said? "
I started to respond, but Fred cut me, "They explained that it was a additional economic burden that the city will not pay for, so they had take your litter with you approach. Yes, the two officials said exactly the same thing again. So Mike wondered why he never gave the information first. Moreover, Mike wonders why the government local municipal even asked for feedback. "
Fred then, but I just tuned out of him, thinking that we had certainly no meeting of minds here. Mike wanted bins in public parks. He thought it was a basic municipal service. He thought to provide feedback may lead to an improvement. Little did Mike know that City Hall was not really open to change. There was one way of doing things - How the town hall. The mayor has always been open to explain exactly what they were doing. They thought that to explain how they did things would help people understand what is happening. They thought that explaining would help reduce problems. They had no indication that persons providing feedback should change.
Mike has never been evaluated.
