Scavenging author Anneli Rufus says looking down is key
Author Anneli Rufus estimates that 95 percent of the decor in her Berkeley, Calif., home has been scavenged. The china blue, maroon and coral paint colors are leftovers from paint shops. When I helped my daughter move into her first college dorm room, I was not prepared for how her room would be tiny! The floor was certainly rare, and it was evident that she would arrive at creative storage solutions.
Decorating a dorm room can be difficult, because obviously your roommate will want a say in how the room is decorated. If you move into a dormitory for the first time or you want to redecorate your existing dorm room, hoping that these will give decorating tips you and your roommate are some creative ideas to give your dorm room a new look at the great times you'll love.
Bags sealed vacuum space are great for transporting clothing to university. You can buy these inexpensively at Walmart or eBay. You will not believe how you can get in those bags. I do not recommend the Extra Large bags, because they are very heavy when full and difficult to transport. These bags can be stored under a bed or piled in the closet.
Small storage ottomans or benches offer seating and storage areas, and are easy to move and fit into small spaces. They are ideal for storing blankets, pillows, hats, gloves and a great place to store book bags or backpacks.
Buy decorative hat boxes in different sizes for storing distinctive. Shaker boxes also make great storage. These two types of storage can be purchased cheaply on eBay.
Luggage case drives can be stacked to create coffee table or end, and used for storage. Most of these can be spray painted.
Hang a handheld organizer shoe in a closet or on the back of a door to hold small items (cosmetics, hair brushes, CD players, pens, pencils, socks, underwear, etc..)
The stackable plastic crates and trays can be used to store information such as books and snacks.
The baskets are easy to find and can be used to store many items. Most of these can be spray painted to match your decor.
Chalk board paint can be used to paint on many items into a bulletin board.
Drying tables white on the back of the door are handy for communicating with friends and roommates and making notes for you. You can also obtain an erasable calendar Dry in a store office supplies to track your busy schedule.
Picture frames can also make great message boards. Simply remove the glass and replaced by a cap, a fabric covered piece of cardboard (use pins to fix the messages), or a piece of white dry erase. Most picture frames can be spray painted.
Area rugs can add a note of individuality to a room. They can also help warm the room and help soundproof it.
Before you started decorating, be sure to look over the entire dorm room to do and not make in your college handbook. Many college textbooks are available on the College website.
It is also a good idea not to buy all your accessories before you actually see the dorm room for the first time. Dorm rooms are all different, and you want to make sure that your furniture and accessories will be held in the hall. Many thrift stores are usually in college towns, you should have no problem finding an occasional furniture Once you get there.
