Question: How do i create an optical obstruction-sensor using infrared?
I have an infrared LED and an infrared receptor (which looks similar to an LED).
Now, my idea is to create an obstruction sensor such that when the obstruction is removed from the path of the light from the IR LED, the sensor should pick up the light from the LED and should let current pass (to a transistor, which then opens up to power an elctromagnet).
Can u please help on how to realize this.Please also help me with information on supply voltage and the polarity.

I'm looking to build the model in the above link but i do not have an opto interrupter. So i want to create my own substitute for it, with IR LEDs and photodiodes. Can u please tell me how i can make this happen?
Answer: You might be able to get away with a very simple circuit like the one on on this page:

Add another resistor at the opamp output to drive the base of your transistor and you are done.
Even easier are darlingtons... just use two, three or four transistors to make a super-beta transistor (i.e. a device with very high current gain):

Each transistor will add about a factor of 10-100. Plenty of gain with three or four.

Many security cameras do not mention much in the dark. This implies that the slinky presence can get away with any act as long as the dark provides a shield.
