Question: Removing glued carpet to lay vinyl tile?

I have carpet glued to my basement floor. I need to remove the carpet so I can lay vinyl tile. I imagine the glue holding the carpet will leave residue that the self-adhesive vinyl floor tile isn't going to like. Can I coat it, can I sand it, or do I have to completely strip it? Any suggestions on a method for preparing the floor along with any recommended coatings or solvents would be helpful. Thanks!

Answer: After stripping off the top of the carpet by cutting the face every 2 ft the length of the room use a razor scraper not just a scrapper these come in a range of 4" to 12". Needless to say but the wider the more it cost but the size of the area should determine which to use. I have done a 12x17 area with a 4" in about an hour. The trick is to keep a sharp blade in the scrapper. This said the floor should be smooth enough to put tile over. I to am not a fan of self adhesive tile but if you use it be sure to use tile adhesive first applied with the flat side of trowel (edge with no teeth) to coat the floor like glazing then let dry and lay tile. Best to put down 1/4 of floor at a time.

The carpet tiles, also called the square of carpet, are similar to traditional carpet texture and content. The difference is mainly that traditional broadloom carpet is huge in size while carpet tiles are cut into sections generally square.
