Question: My chihuahua is messing in the floor when I leave the door open. How do I stop her?
I have a big room in my house for my washer, dryer, computer. Its like an office and a wash room in 1 big room.
When I leave the door open to the kitchen by accident, my 7 yr old chihuahua runs up the stairs into a spare bedroom and poops on the nice plush carpet in less time than it took to bring in a bag of groceries. She has done it 4 or 5 times now. She has the whole basement, and utility room to herself, but prefers to crap on the floor in the spare bedroom. Why is she doing this? How can I get her to knock it off.Answer: Dogs develop what is called a substrate preference, which means that once they get a feel for a certain thing under their paws when they go to the bathroom,they always will prefer to have that under them when they go.(That's why some animals will only go on grass, while others will only go on cement). Your dog may have a substrate preference for your plush carpet.Try putting a piece of it downstairs for her to go on, if you can't keep her off the one upstairs.
