Question: Carpet Cleaning? Have a Professional service do it, rent a machine, or buy your own?

We're buying a house very soon, and although the carpets should be replaced we dont want to spend that much on a new carpet right now. (carpets are in good condition just have stains and path marks) What I want to know is should we spend the money to have a professional service come in, should we rent a unit from a local company (u-haul has a carpet cleaner rental for $20 a day does anyone have any positive/negitive feedback on going that way) Or should we buy a Hoover SteamVac (they rated the highest in consumer reviews) or another home use model. We have at least 600 square feet to clean and are on a budget, and have two toddlers running around spilling all the time...

I would have the professionals come and do it before you move in seeing as to how you said you have toddlers, you really don't know whats in the carpet and don't want them playing in it, then if you can afford it buy the Hoover steam vac,, i have had one for 6 years now and use it all the time they are great for kiddy messes ( HAVE 3 GRANDCHILDREN AND A DOG) as far the rent your own ,,, they just move the dirt from one area to the next and don;t really extract the water enough which isn't good for the carpet or floors under,, Stanley steamer has great specials for cleaning as do many other companies

Question: Fix or Replace Oreck XL Upright Vacuum?

It is a 400. 7 year old vacuum. It needs a new motor and the local Oreck place wants 110.00 to fix plus 20.00 for 2 other minor issues. Do I invest in this Oreck or buy a new cheaper but higher rated by Consumer Reports Hoover WidePath for 60.00?

Answer: Fix the Oreck. The least expensive Oreck is $300. Do you really think a $60 Hoover is better. Consumer Reports is the worst place to get information. They rig the tests to get the results they want.
