Question: Do hand sanitizers like Germ-X and Purell really do a good job of killing germs?
Do hand sanitizers really do what we think they're doing? Or are we just kidding ourselves? Is there any definitive research that you can point me to?
Answer: studies are a bit hard to read on this. Articles like this one confuse the issue:

It says that "Families that used alcohol-based Hand Sanitizer gel had a 59 percent reduction..." well sure, but they probably often took other precautions in food preparation and sanitization. You have to figure any family that uses sanitizers also takes many other precautions.
There are other studies that say the alcohol based sanitizers reduce the natural resistance, and reduce oils in the skin that inhibit bacteria from clinging.

I think the consensus is that they work, but are no replacement for soap and water when available.
The question raised most recently is whether or not killing the germs with hand sanitizers is increasing the rate at which they evolve a resistance. I guess we will just have to wait and see on that one.

Question: Why have they gone to foam hand soap instead of liquid soap in (almost) all public restrooms?
Answer: Because of the expansion of the foam. If you get soap in a liquid form, its a solid glob of soap, half of which you will probably wash down the drain, and most people usually use 2-3 pumps of soap.
The foam soap comes initially in a liquid form, but when you pump the dispenser, it injects air into the soap, and you get a foamy glob. In this respect, you use less soap(since you're getting a mixture of air and soap), and you dont wash half the soap away getting a lather.
So essentially, it works out to be cheaper, and works just as well.

Memory Foam is made with a polyurethane material. In order to increase its density, other chemicals are added which increases its level of viscosity. The combination of chemicals used determines the visco-elastic nature of the polyurethane foam and depending on such combination, foam has the characteristic of being firmer in cool temperatures and softer in warmer environments.
