Question: Environmentally appropriate weed and chinch bug killer?

In Ontario, Canada, a law went into effect this week forbidding the sale of Killex, Semin and Malathion and all other pesticides. Can you suggest another method. I've tried soap and lemon juice but I had trouble getting the solution up the narrow plastic hose to mix with water.

Answer: You can put paper, cloth, cardboard or plastic down around your plants to kill the weeds. If you want to use soap that is in powder form mix it in hot water on the stove first. You will have to let it sit. Home remedies are usually invented by patient people. If you are a quick-fix kinda person this might disappoint you today but in three days you will be happy that you too the time to do something healthy for your plants.

Mix in the lemon juice just before spraying.

You could always look up a distributor for Diatomacious Earth or Food Grade DE, it is powder fine calcium type deposits that insects hate, it kills them by drying them out, but is healthy for plants because of the calcium nutrients.

Question: Can I use pvc pipe as a solar heater for my above ground 15 ft pool and what size should I use?

I heard from someone that I cooould build my own solor heater using pvc pipe by laying it on my garage roof and circulating the by use of my filter pump.

Answer: You are confusing different pipe material. You don't want to use pvc, you want to use poly pipe. Not only is pvc more expensive, but you won't get it in black. It only comes in white or grey.
For a 15 ft above ground, I'd use 3/4 inch in a length of around 200 feet minimum. You need to spread the coils out a bit. Just lay them down on the roof, cut the tape and start moving the coil, like you would a stack of cards, from the top, to spread it out. Don't forget to secure them in place.
You'll need to build a bypass valve assembly for all of this. The reason being is that at night or on cold days, without a bypass, your pool water will be traveling up to a cold roof, giving off your pool heat. The by pass allows you to throttle the volume going to the solar collector and to shut it off completely at night. You can build an automated one with temperature probes and thermostat relay and motorized valve for about 250 dollars or you can go cheap and make a manually controlled one for about 25 bucks.
You just have to remember to shut the solar off every night or you'll piss off all the heat you gained back into the atmosphere.
You just need to put two plumbing Tees in your return line after your filter but before your chlorinator, if you have one. In between the Tees will be your bypass valve. The Tee closest to the filter is your "to solar". The one after the valve and before the chlorinator or pool, is your "from solar". The valve operates as a throttling device. The more it's in the closed position, the more water it sends up to the solar. In fully open, it sends NO water up there. It's easier for the filter to push it to the pool than up to the roof. In fully closed, ALL the water goes to the solar. You don't want that though. You want slow moving water going through the collector to get as much heat as possible.
The size of Tees and the size of the valve are going to depend on your existing plumbing. Probably it's 1 1/4 inch, being an above ground. So you'll need two 1 1/4 X 3/4 X 1 1/4 Tees ( three dollars) and a 1 1/4 valve, preferably a ball valve, not a gate valve (20 dollars).
Check the plumbing first before getting those parts though, you may be lucky and the guys that built it put in 1 1/2 inch plumbing. If that's the case, get your Tees and valve accordingly.
Iv'e seen many of these do it yourself solar rigs and they all work just about as well as a 1500 dollar store bought one and usually less headache to install and maintain to boot.

Backyard Masterpiece

Ponds backyard that was believed to be owned by only the rich and Filthy Rich. That was then. However, garden ponds can be constructed by the same simple owners. They can animate things and can be a good topic of conversation for guests and visitors. It will not only provide a visually attractive and beautiful backyard but relaxing as well.

Comfortable, small and rich and luxuriant the backyard water gardens can vary from almost any design you want. Just a little background on the construction of a pond backyard and just the right materials to create your private oasis.

The first step. Decide where your pond will be located.

Look for an area in your yard where there are small trees. Falling leaves are a big no-no in your pond because he can work daily maintenance. Place your Basin in an area affected by the heat of the sun. Aquatic plants need sunlight to grow. However, avoid excessive heat as this may cause some plants such as lilies die.

Step six. Just add water.

Now is the time to fill the pond. Observe leaks. Clean the area first, then add water to clean your pond. Place the plants to their rightful place to create a beautiful appearance. Let the plants stand at least a week, then it should add the fish. Add the fish one at a time. Fill the pond with just good quantity of fish. Consider the size of the pond and your fish. Make sure they are compatible.

Many owners rely on sump pumps to take water from their basements. However, a frozen sump pump can cause major worries.

During the colder months, a concern for many is the freezing water as possible in the discharge line from the sump pump or around the foundation, has causing potential damage not only to the sump pump, but also at home.

Grading
An important step in prevention of any type of water damage to your home is to create a slope of land around your house so that water will be directed away from Foundation - this is called "classification". Because water flows over the hill, landscaping your property and that water flows away from home will prevent seepage into the basement during a storm, and keep water expelled by your sump pump to drain back into the house. Walk around your house after a heavy rain and verify the pooling near the foundation; puddles indicate the sections of your property that need further classification.

Sump Pump Models

The sump pump must work harder when water freezes in the pipe discharge, often causing the engine to overheat. Listen to the pump to determine if it is running more often or for longer periods of time. In such cases, it is a good idea to periodically stop the engine off to cool.
