Question: With an infinite view of space, what would the sky look like from earth?

Standing outside and seeing just the brightest "stars". I couldn't help but wonder what the sky would look like if we had an infinite view of space and could see everything from where we were on the ground. There are amazing photos of space littered with galaxies and stars in any one picture almost as if there were very little "space" there at all (camera perspective of course). Any one know of any representations of this? i think it would be great to see and really give people like me more perspective of the universe.

Answer: The sky would be a solid smear of white light.
You would see a star in every conceivable position in the sky when looking toward our galactic center. When trying to see beyond our own galaxy, your best bet would be to look at about 90 degrees from the "milky way" where you would be looking through the thickness of the galactic disk (about 1500 light years from our position). Through this relatively thin patch of stars, I imagine that all the visible space in between them would be completely filled with the background light from the rest of the hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe.

We are far better off the way we are. With most of the sky being dark, we are able to resolve the deep sky objects with telescopes. Astronomy would be a real drag if every image you tried to acquire was washed out with endless background light.

It has been seventeen years since the launch of the Hubble telescope. The cost to the United States and the European Union was originally established approximately 500 million dollars. The program costs are now estimated at over 5 billion dollars. The costs of Hubble have been criticized before launch and early problems with the imaging system of the telescope also hurt the public perception of the initial project.

Hubble has produced information on black holes, gamma ray bursts, as well as other scientific mysteries of the universe.
