Question: Other ways to go natural and green?

We recycle, We use re usable bags, we have fuel efficient compact cars, We have all fluorescent energy saving light bulbs in our home. We turn the water off while we brush our teeth.....so on.

I have recently started canning food and jam with no added preservatives. Are there other methods we could be using to ease our use on the planet?

I want to eliminate my dependency on large grocery stores and expand.

Answer: I have made a lot of changes to reduce my impact and found many of my ideas in the books that I read, my 2 favorites are "The Green Book" and "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle". I also recommend "Easy Green Living", "Green up your Clean Up" and "Gorgeously Green"

Here are some areas I focus on. Reduce consumption across the board and look for natural products. For Clothing I buy Organic cotton or organic cotton blend with modal (wood fibre) or bamboo, I also have some wool, cashmere and silk. My favorite shoes are simple shoes. I use a color theme and buy what I need. Even if you don't buy natural fabrics, looking for items that don't require dry cleaning or have wrinkle resistant chemicals on them can help. Look in the closet before you shop, if you have children chances are they could go weeks without wearing the same outfit twice, decide what they need before you go to the store. Pick a color theme, it allows more mix and match, so fewer items make more outfits, it also reduces the risk of an item sitting in the closet unused because the color doesn't look good on you or it doesn't match anything.

Food: plan a menu, make a grocery list then check the kitchen before you hit the store. Use up what you have on hand, don't let things expire. Avoid over buying when things are on sale or freeze excess to take advantage of sales. Check out your stores bulk bins, I purchase a variety of items from them, it allows me to save money, buy the exact portion I need and reduce packaging. Cut meat portions, I buy most of my meat from the butcher counter, I ask them to package it in the portions I use. I purchase whole chickens and cut them up myself, less packaging and I can portion it to reduce waste and use parts to make my own stock. Learn to cook more grains and legumes from dry and reduce cans and boxes, plus it saves money.

Replace disposable with reusable everywhere you can. Use cloth napkins and kitchen towels instead of paper, if you dine outside often invest in a a set of plastic dishes, get rid of the swiffers and dusting cloths etc and use a Washable Microfiber cloth.

Detox cleaning supplies, I use vinegar and soap for most of my surface cleaning an dbaking soda when I need to scrub. I use non toxic cleaners in my washer and dishwaser and vinegar for my rinse agent and Fabric Softener. I rarely use bleach, but I keep a bottle of non clorine bleach.

Start a garden, and make it organic. This will ensure no pesticides and save you money. There is nothing better than going out and picking items fresh to put into your meals.

Question: Trade in my SUV or wait until it's paid off to do trade in?

Ok, so I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra S w/about 24,000 miles on it, excellent condition, along w/some extras like running boards, organizer for trunk. I still owe about $16,000 on it. I would like to trade in for a 2009 Cube which is about $19110. What would be the best thing to do financially? I want lower car payments & better gas mileage but also want the options that come w/the Cube I've given the price of. I've never traded in a car before so this is all new to me and I'm not sure which would be a better financial decision, to trade in now or wait until it's paid off and get a lower trade in amount. If anyone could explain the ins and outs and which decision w/be a better one in the long run financially, it would be a huge help. Thanks all!

So what you have is: Want to purchase a new car with large discounts because new car sales are terrible, but used car sale prices are at all time highs due to the lack of trade ins on new cars. MidSize SUV/s like yours are bringing way over book.

There are ways to repair scratches on your hardwood floor, even the deepest of them.

The remedy that you use for scratches on your wood floor frank depends on a number of factors - the depth of the Scratch is the finish of your floor, the stain on your floor (if any) and if the scratch has penetrated. If the scratch has penetrated the finish to damage the wood:

1. Use a touch-up polyurethane kit purchased at your hardware store.

2. Zero Fill with filling.

3. Stain if necessary.

4. Finish by two or three light coats of polyurethane.

You can buy a repair kit hardwood to your local hardware store to keep in your toolbox. It consists of several sticks of putty color wood that look like crayons. When you get a scratch, you simply choose the color closest to the color stain, rub the stick putty on it and rub with a soft cloth. The scratch will virtually disappear.

Deep scratches and gouges

Again, the best solution for repairing deep gouges and scratches on your hardwood floor depends on the general condition of the floor and extent damage. If your floor is in good condition and excellent gouge affects only one or two planks of wood, your best option is probably to replace these boards.

If the scratches have penetrated the finish and carved wood, you may have to refinish the entire floor. As screening and editing, it's just a DIY job if you are an experienced handyman. If it is within your budget, sanding and finishing a hardwood floor is a job for professionals.
